A number of artists have been asked to design a work of art for various atria in the new hospital of MST Enschede. SIDstudio was as a structural consultant responsible to investigate the feasibility of the artworks. The artworks are: Samenstel, Schaal, Paddenstoel, Kegel, Pop-up, Wolk, Brug and Samengestelde Mobile.
All artworks are suspended from the roof beams to which requirements of maximum loading apply. Therefore, the self-weight and permanent loads are determined in collaboration with the artists. The challenge turned out to be the wind load acting on the art caused by the smoke extraction system. Consequently, displacement as a result of this air flow was analyzed for each work leading to a well constructed structural design.
